A Nerve Conduction Study (NCV) is an analysis of how quickly your brain, through your nerves, can communicate with your extremities. NCV is often used to tell the difference between a nerve disorder and a muscle disorder. Nerve conduction studies may also reveal the cause of symptoms, such as numbness, tingling, and chronic pain or nerve damage.
What does it involve
A nerve conduction study monitors the electrical signals in the human body. These studies can determine if there is any impediment in the nerves between the brain and the area of study. During the study, we will evaluate the function of your motor and sensory nerves. NCS will stimulate your nerves by applying electrode patches to your skin above a nerve. One patch applies the electrode while the other records it. This allows our physicians to see a full diagnostic of your nerves and determine if there are any abnormalities.
